Machnical Design

"Z(H)ERO"

This week’s assignment is mechanical design. This week we are focussing on designing the mechanical parts of our ‘make a machine’ task. For the task, we are making a robotic arm called “Z(H)ERO.

Early sketches

The task was mainly taken as a group work with one of our friends taking lead this week as his engineering degree was done on mechanical design. He worked out all the calculations and the requirements of the components. After figuring out, all the requirements were discussed with the rest of the group, and after long hours of discussion we agreed upon certain design and listed task to be done, which were divided amongst ourselves. My task was to make a mechanism to connect the end effector with the other part of the arm.

Group discussion and presentation

We did some basic calculations and drawings to brainstorm out ideas.

MDF Prototype

Testing the length with templates

We made some templates from MDF to test out the viability of the length of the arm. The template included holes at certain intervals where we used nut and bolt to figure out the reach of our arm at different arrangement.

Mini Version

We made a mini version from MDF to see how the mechanism works, it was fun to see how the final project was going to turn out to be.

Solidworks rendering

Here is the final rendering of the project done by one of our friends, Rohan.

Physically FIT!

We made a final design of the robot arm on MDF before moving to much stable material.

“united we stand, divided we execute”

The team effort payed off in the end with valuable values being learned
1. Communication skills
2. Working and planning as a team member.
2. Cooperation
3. Team work problem solving
4. Work division
